THE annual Umgungundlovu Youth Championship returns on June 16 at Durban University of Technology, Indumiso campus from 11 am.

The aim of this competition is to try and get youth engaged in ballroom and Latin dance.

Palesa Rabelemana, public relations officer of Ballroom Dance KZN, who is also a dancer, said with this competition they are trying to give youth who love ballroom and Latin dance a platform to showcase their talent and also try and attract other dancers who would like to try out these dances.

She said: “We want to recruit youth into joining and exploring this kind of dance. We believe that there are a lot of young people out there who have talent in dancing and who love ballroom dance and Latin, it’s just that they do not know how to go about it. We want them to know that we are here for them we even have dance classes. Some dancers will also be selected to represent KwaZulu-Natal in the South African Champions,”she said.

Rabelemana said they want to grow this dance in Pietermaritzburg, even in the townships.

“I have started teaching young children in some of the schools around Pieternaritzburg and I want to teach the youth in different communities but I am still looking for the venues for our classes. Being involved in dancing will also keep them away from doing wrong things like getting into crime, alcohol and drugs. They will always have something to keep them busy and they will love it.”

All dancers from Umgungundlovu are invited to enter this competition. Spectators entry fee is R80 adults and R60 children under the age of 16.
