“Living in that place is a health hazard, no one deserves to live there.”This is how police officers have described the Alexandra police barracks. The exterior of the barracks, which is at the rear of Alexandra Road police station, is said to be “filthy and not maintained.”The police officers who live in these barracks say they are tired of living under these circumstances. They told Echo their health is put in danger everyday because of the filth.Apart from the filth, they also complained that the building is not maintained and there are leaks everywhere. At the single quarters they are currently sharing one toilet because the other toilets are blocked and others are broken. “We need intervention from the province. We cannot live like this while we are paying. The place has such a foul smell that you can not even open windows.Sometimes it is even hard to eat once you have been outside. We have rats all over caused by the rubbish in front of our houses. “What makes us more angry is that every time when we report our problems, we are told that they have been reported to Province but we never get any responses nor see action,” said one police officer who did not want to be mentioned for fear of victimisation. He said they have been living under these circumstances for years now and nothing changes, instead the situation gets worse, yet accommodation money is debited from their accounts every month. Another police officer said their lives are in danger because there is no one who is monitoring the place. Anyone comes and goes as they please, even those who are not police and not residence there. “We even have foreign nationals who are living there and we do not know how because they are not police officers. We have tried so many times to raise our concerns, but still no action is being taken. “This place used to be clean and maintained years ago but it is very bad. We need change - we can not continue living like this. No one deserves to live like this. We are tired, we have tolerated this for too long now, it needs to stop,” he said. The police officers say they used to have four cleaners but now they only have two, after the other two retired. “The only two that are left now only clean in front of the police station where people enter, but at the back of the police station it is filthy and smelling. We want the two other cleaners replaced and we want them to have a plan on how they are going to keep the place clean because we are paying. “Even now, we are sharing one toilet with the females at the single quarters. The other three toilets are broken and it has been over three months without them being fixed. At the gate we have no security guard and as a result there are some members who had problems of people breaking into their rooms. This is a serious matter and urgent action is needed because we cannot continue living like this while are paying big money,” said another source.Comment from the police was not available at the time of going to print.
