PIETERMARITZBURG snatched a Guinness World Record on Saturday after a 27-hour non-stop game of action cricket at the Action Sports KZN Midlands arena in Mkondeni.

The Round Table Pietermaritzburg 12 started playing at 10 am on Friday and finished at 1 pm on Saturday.

Round Table Pietermaritzburg 12 member Garth Borain said they had taken up the challenge to beat the record set by a Benoni team two years ago, to raise money for charities in Pietermaritzburg. The previous record had been 25 hours and nine minutes. The average age of the Pietermaritzburg team was older at 33, when compared with the Benoni team’s average age of 19.

Borain said the support for the team on Saturday had been “fantastic” and the total amount of money raised would be added up by Wednesday morning.

On Friday afternoon, Borain said they had already raised over R20 000.

“We are all very tired, but it was good and very well supported,” said Borain.

He added that the team was thankful for all the donations and support received during the 27 hours they had played. The team was made up of Round Table Pietermaritzburg 12 members as well as a few of their friends and colleagues. The main sponsors of the even were KFC, although the team were given donations from various other businesses and organisations too. Official confirmation of the record is expected to be finalised within four to six weeks.
