Battle still on after win

MARITZBURG United left it late in a thrilling encounter which saw the stadium erupt in support of the Boys in Blue as they overcame rivals AmaZulu 2-1 on Friday.

It looked to be another bleak game for United as the side continued to apply pressure on the visitors — even striking the bar from a free-kick — but went down 1-0 when Bandile Shandu’s effort to clear the ball resulted in a goal for Usuthu.

United were left reeling after squandering various chances before and after the break, with Shandu striking wide off the net in the 47th minute while Kutumela’s shot from six yards out failed to beat Siyabonga Mbatha.

The Team of Choice coach Eric Tinkler then brought on Nazeer Allie, Pogiso Sanoka and Yannick Zakri, resulting in Mbatha finally being beaten after Fortune Makaringe put the ball in the back of the net.

Maritzburg then found a way to snatch the win after just a minute into added time when Moseamedi volleyed the ball after Mohau Mokate set him up, smashing in the winner to keep United’s prospects of staying in the Absa Premiership alive while denting AmaZulu’s top-eight hopes in the pro- cess.
