Be cautious when employing ‘off-the-street’ help

2017-09-27 06:02

THE Mountain Rise SAPS advises the community about hiring domestic workers or gardeners or any hired help off the street.

The station’s spokesperson, Captain Gay Ebrahim said in most cases the helpers are hired without any screening done by employers and that employers are usually not in possession of the worker’s identity document or photo.

“This is a challenge when theft or housebreakings occur on the premises and the suspects are the helpers who cannot be traced,” Ebrahim said.

Mountain Rise SAPS Station Commander Brigadier Boxer Pillay emphasised the importance of checking references of possible employees and encouraged employers to register employees in terms of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act.
