Belfort Park cleaned

THE Belfort area finally received a much-warranted clean-up of their recreational park on Himalaya and Fairbreeze roads a month ago after mounting complaints by residents about the park’s unkempt and unruly nature due to years of neglect.

“We were being plagued by numerous robberies by informal residents and criminals from the park due to its overgrowth and unkept conditions.

“The park had become a dumping ground for some residents as well as outsiders,” said Ahmed Khan, one of the residents involved in facilitating the clean-up.

Khan said that with the help of Mehmood Oumar, the ANC PR ward councillor for ward 35, they were finally able to ensure the resurrection of the park for the public as a safe space facility.

Oumar said the park was in an appalling condition prior to the clean-up, and that residents had complained many times about the neglect.

“Previously this bush had become a haven for criminals as you could not see anything due to the bush. Now it has been cleaned and maintained since the cleaning,” said Oumar.

“Let us pray that this facility continues to be maintained regularly without us having to beg for help,” said Khan.

“Parties need to be held accountable for non-service delivery in wards otherwise why else should we vote for them.”

Oumar said the park should be put to recreational use for the community, suggesting that residents use it as a play area for children or as a sports grounds.
