Bessie Head hosts poetry competition

2016-03-09 06:00

IN view of the fact that talented poets are vanishing in the minds of the articulate brigade, the UMgungundlovu Poetry Competition gave poets a platform from which they could recite and expose their poetry flair.

The competition was held recently at the Bessie Head Library in Church Street.

More than 40 participants took part and were from all seven municipalities under UMgungundlovu District Municipality - Impendle, Mkhambathini, Mpofana, Msunduzi, Richmond, Umngeni and Umshwathi.

The curator and organiser of the competition, Botsotso Mahlaba, said each municipality elected its own representatives.

“The theme of the competition was local government elections. The theme encourages people to register and vote. It is their right, and they should do the right thing,” said Mahlaba.

The winner of the competition was Ndumiso Khanyile from Msunduzi Municipality who took home R5 000. Second place went to Nthatheli Phetha from Richmond Municipality who won R3 000 and Bongeka Zuma from Msunduzi Municipality won R1 000 for third place.

“This is the first time we have hosted a competition of this nature. We are hoping to host another one before the end of the year,” he said.
