Beware of distractions while stopped at robots

MOTORIST, Verusha Naidoo, appeals to the community to remain vigilant at all times after she and her sister were assaulted and robbed while stationary at a robot on the corner of Chota Motala road and the Liberty Midlands Mall off-ramp last Tuesday.

With her car windows rolled down before she came to a stop at the robot, Naidoo had left her phone on charge in the centre console of her car while she and her sister waited for the robot to turn green.

“My sister was in the passenger seat and her window was open enough for this man, who we thought was a beggar, to put his arm in and assault my sister in order for him to grab the phone from the charging point,” said Naidoo.

Naidoo said that she and her sister were completely shocked and taken by surprise as the man approached the vehicle from behind, out of plain sight of the two of them.

“I was aware of the guys in front of me but because this guy approached my vehicle from the side I could not see [him] as I was focused on what was in front of me,” said Naidoo.

Naidoo has since taken to Facebook to share her story, others have come forward to share their stories and state their anger and shock over the incident.

“It is all a plot to distract you to get what they want,” says Naidoo in her Facebook post referring to the people who stand and beg for money on the streets. She urged others not to give money to beggars, a statement with which many Facebook users agreed with.
