‘Black Month’ initiative approved

2017-12-13 06:02

THE Msunduzi municipal council approved its debt collection initiative called “Black Month” at its full council meeting last Wednesday.

The initiative means a discount of 100% interest and collection charges for the settlement of rate arrears, a discount of 50% of all domestic services charges outstanding as at June 30, and a discount of 30% of all business services charges outstanding as at June 30.

An advertisement for the campaign initially advertised that it would run from November 23 to December 22, however, at the council meeting, the dates were adjusted to December 4 to January 4, 2018.

Government institutions that owe the municipality are excluded from this campaign whose namesake is inspired by Black Friday.

Debtors not in arrears and who pay their accounts during this period will receive a one percent discount, but this will exclude the rates portion of the pay- ment.

According to a report to the Msunduzi municipal council in last week’s council meeting agenda, the initiative is meant to decrease debt and increase municipal revenue.

The report says the munici- pality anticipates collecting R100 000 000.

The debtors’ analysis in the report reveals that R1 237 850 791 is owed by households and businesses owe R399 455 012.

Customers that fall under the municipality’s indigent policy is R101 479 547 while government institutions owe R127 812 141.

A further R127 497 655 falls under the other category bringing the total to R1994 095 146.

“People must come forward to avoid the next step, that of being ‘handed over’, which will ultimately result in the attachment of their assets,” said Msunduzi spokesperson Thobeka Mafumbatha. She said regular payers must watch “the space” because there is going to be a big surprise for them.

“We encourage our citizens to keep their accounts fully paid.

“This campaign will run throughout Pietermaritzburg to encourage people to take this opportunity and pay their debt.”
