Blinding advertisements

2016-10-12 06:00

WHAT started as a few advertising signs at the Birmingham-Bhambatha roads intersection has since increased, with more businesses erecting advertising boards at the entrance to Birmingham Road.

While I am not sure of the by-laws regarding outdoor signage, the guidelines in the South African Manual for Outdoor Advertising (Samoac) state:

5.1.2 Safety

• No advertisement or advertising structure, as permitted by Samoac, shall in the opinion of the roads authority be so placed or contain an element which distracts the attention of drivers in a manner likely to lead to unsafe driving conditions;

• No advertisement or advertising structure, as permitted by Samoac, shall be attached to a road traffic sign or signal (unless specifically provided for in the SADC-RTSM or the SARTSM), obscure a road traffic sign or signal, create confusion with a road traffic sign or signal, interfere with the functioning of a road traffic sign or signal or create a road safety hazard in the opinion of the roads authority.

The traffic lights are surrounded by these signs, which in my opinion pose a distraction to drivers.

The matter of advertisers that attach signs to traffic signs also necessitates intervention by local authorities, as do election posters that can still be seen around the city.

The valued opinion and proposed action from our traffic authority will be appreciated.
