THE highly-anticipated release of the book, Chota Motala: A Biography of Political Activism, was held at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal (UKZN) on Saturday.

The launch was well attended by political figures such as Pravin Gordhan, Yunus Carrim and Dr Zweli Mkhize as well as members of the Motala family.

Based on the life of Motala up to the moment of his death in a holding cell in 1962, the book’s author, Goolam Vahed, said that the it describes how various political activists and freedom fighters fought for fair treatment for all races.

“Much of the history of Pietermaritzburg remains untold and I hope that in the future, the histories of people such as Harry Gwala, Moses Mabhida and others are told,” said Vahed.

Mkhize said he remembered Motala as a peaceful man who always preached peace wherever he went, and said that he hoped the book would inspire more of its kind.

Gordhan said the book highlighted how people of different races who were oppressed realised that they all had a similar interest in the struggle against apartheid.
