IN doing their part to uphold the spirit of Nelson Mandela, KnitWits for Madiba have once again embarked on their annual secret scarf day mission.

KnitWits, and volunteers across the country, have been churning out scarves, en masse, for the 67 blankets event. These scarves were tied to trees in different areas across the country, including Pietermaritzburg, last Thursday for people in need to take for some winter warmth.

67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day ambassador Shareen Scott told Echo that they were very excited about this initiative, saying that they have tied 100 scarves in different spots across Pietermaritzburg.

“We always run this programme, every year, all over the country. We are on the fourth year now. It is one of our ways of giving back to the needy people in our country.

“It is also a good way of getting people together to do something for needy people.

We will continue to do it and we hope that, as time goes on, more people get involved so that we can help as many people as we can,” she said.

Founder of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day Carolyn Steyn said: “Our knitwits and happy hookers throughout South Africa have been lobbying, knitting and crocheting to make sure that there are thousands of scarves to tie around trees for people who need some warmth to take a scarf that has been made with love. As Madiba said: ‘it’s in our hands now’, and that is the ethos of the amazing family of 67 blankets. This year is also a teaser for the record breaking 27km scarf we will be laying out in Howick at the capture site on July 29, ”she said.
