Sparked on and taught by legendary street musician and activist Ntsangu Roots Cele, the Undivided Roots are a family band for any occasion that busk in and around Pietermaritzburg and Durban.

Consisting of siblings Wadada, Judgement, Heaven, Revival, Rainbow, and Spear, the Undivided Roots were taught music by their late father and they cover a wide variety of music including reggae, classic rock, R&B, and some jazz.

“Our band was started by our father and teacher Roots Cele, who played rock music in apartheid South Africa so you can imagine the looks he got back then from some,” said vocalist and guitarist Wadada, who added that in the 1970s Roots was heavily influenced by Bob Marley and Peter Tosh and he eventually turned to Rastafarianism, which opened his musical journey into reggae.

Wadada, who took over the band after his father passed away, said that his father chose to home school them, teaching them to play instruments and perform.

Hailing from Edendale, the band looks to continuously improve their performances and to perform in larger and larger concerts. One of the most unique features of the band is that their lead guitarist is only 10 years old.

“As entertainers we excel in many varieties of music besides reggae. There are six members who use different instruments, depending on which genre they are playing, and most can be switched between instruments and either lead vocal or backing vocals,” said Wadada.

Undivided Roots have played at the Bob Marley Earth Day at uShaka Marine World twice, at a number of festivals including Southern Cross Music Festival, Poets Porch Music Festival, RoyalRock (Royal Show), Nedbank Eston Show, and at the Spar Womens Race 2014 to name a few events.
