Businesswoman fined for ‘illegal dumping’

2015-12-02 06:00

THE owner of Toshiba Midlands, Kershnee Naidu, was puzzled after a Msunduzi Municipality official issued her an illegal dumping fine of R500 for a broken tree branch that was lying outside her business premises on the corner of Burger and Retief streets.

The fine she received was for illegal dumping of garden refuse on a public road.

Naidu maintains she did not dump illegally, saying that the branch must have broken off outside her business.

“This is just crazy. I did not do illegal dumping. In the past couple of days it has been windy and the branch must have broken off from the trees outside.

The official told me that the tree branch had been lying there for a long time and that I was responsible for putting it there.

“How can the municipality give me a fine for something I did not do?” asked Naidu.

In response, Msunduzi Municipality acting marketing and communications manager Nqobile Madonda said: “The fine was issued for illegal dumping of garden refuse on a public road on 4 November 2015.

If there is any objection to the fine it can be done so in writing attached to a copy of the fine, addressed for attention to the manager of public safety at 21 Washington Road or alternatively wait for the summons, which will reflect the date to appear in court.”
