Captain - fallen, but not forgotten

2016-03-30 06:00

NIELEN Naidoo joined us at SAPS Mountain Rise as a student. One evening while working late I came upon this young man and was impressed with his mannerisms. The next morning I arranged for him to work in my office to enable experienced members to pass on their knowledge, expertise and acumen to this promising young man and for him to work under my guidance and supervision. When head office asked for nominations for public relations officers, I boldly nominated him, but although it did not materialise, I was confident he would acquit himself well in that position.

I left the station shortly thereafter on transfer and was pleased to learn a number of years later that my protégé was commissioned and promoted to the rank of captain.

Before the fatal night certain suspects apparently escaped from the Mountain Rise police cells. The following day information was received as to the whereabouts of these suspects.

The brave hearts responded promptly only to fall prey to an alleged ambush that was laid for these officers and they were fatally wounded, never to return home to their families.

His wife, three young sons and a daughter, who was born after his demise, were robbed of a husband and a dad. The captain was a dedicated husband and father. Family members are still traumatised by their loss.

Not only was it a great loss to the community of Pietermaritzburg, but also our rainbow nation as a whole. “Servamus et Servimus”. Part of the cream of our crop in their formative years stolen forever.

This is sad, but real - fallen but not forgotten.
