WITH the highest unemployment rate on record at 29,1% in the third quarter of 2019, South Africa is faced with a critical situation where there are over 6,7 million people out of work.Hardest hit by the problem are the youth. According to Stats SA, the percentage of young people aged 15 to 24 years who are not in employment, education or training, has increased to 32,3%. It goes without saying that young girls are those most disadvantaged by the situation. The official unemployment rate in KwaZulu-Natal is 25,9% and the expanded unemployment rate is 41,4%. With this information as a backdrop it becomes critical for society to rally together to try to find solutions that will offer opportunities for the unemployed youth. Education remains the cornerstone to upskilling the youth and giving them the chance to participate actively in our democracy. As a response to the problem, preparations are well under way for CareerX — KZN’s largest career exhibition — which is taking place at the Royal showgrounds in Pietermaritzburg from March 6 to March 9. The three-day careers event will be filled with interactive exhibition displays, talks by career experts, delicious food, competition prizes and more for Grades 10 to 12 and their parents from all demographic groups. CareerX aims to help the youth make the right choice for a bright future, and attract visitors primarily from Pietermaritzburg and the surrounding inland towns as well as Durban and the rest of the province.CareerX is looking to attract academic institutions, companies and government institutions to come together and help achieve the following goals:• display the widest variety of degrees and diplomas on offer from tertiary institutions;• promote the power of artisanal skills, vocational studies and apprenticeship training;• provide a platform for international universities to showcase their offering;• use a multi-platform approach to ensure the youth and their parents gain a greater understanding and insight into the current working world; and • create an action-packed, interactive and fun event that creates excitement for the youth. If your organisation is keen to be involved as an exhibitor or sponsor, contact Alain Dalais (email@example.com) today.— Supplied.
