Celebrating a decade of poetry

2018-08-01 06:00

TO celebrate a decade of writing poetry Nduduzo Mkhize, known as “Gubhela”, has planned a one-man show, called NgokukaGubhela Chapter 1 Verse 1, that will be held on September 15 at BAT Centre, Durban, from 1 pm to 5 pm.

Born in Elandskop, Gubhela (26) said he decided to celebrate his 10 year anniversary in style. He said that, after this show, he will also tour parts of KZN.

“I will be travelling to different places doing the one-man show. Durban is just a start — I will also go to Pietermaritzburg and Ladysmith.

“I will be performing all my poems from day one when I started writing poetry. This is a big milestone for me that I will cherish forever.

“There are lots of poets who wanted to come this far but they did not. I am very grateful to God for giving me such talent and guiding me all the time.

“This is also my way of thanking my fans for supporting me for the past 10 years and also to encourage them to continue to support me as I still have a long journey ahead of me,” he said.

Gubhela said he never thought that, one day, he would be a poet until one of his friends invited him to a poetry session.

“From that first session, I just fell in love with poetry and I started writing my own poems. The past 10 years have not been an easy journey but I survived and did my best and I am so grateful.

“It is very difficult in the art industry because you have to find yourself and know who you are — without that you will not move forward or succeed.

“I want to continue and do my best so that up-and-coming poets have something to look up to and follow,” he added.

Besides being a poet, Gubhela owns a company called Gubhela Brands which aims to help young up-and up-coming artists.

He said he plans to grow his company so that he can assist more young people.

Gubhela also revealed that he might be releasing a CD soon.

Gubhela will be performing in Pietermaritzburg on October 28 and in Newscastle on November 10.

Tickets are available at Computicket at R150 general and R200 VIP. For more information contact 074 769 9915.
