THE 2016 Witness Maritzburg City Marathon, powered by Clover, boasts numerous changes for the 20th instalment of the race, including a new venue - the Alexandra Park athletics stadium.

“It’s a year of change with a new logo, new venue, later start time, and longer cut-off times, to name a few,” said race organiser, John Hall.

Hall said with the increasing popularity and growing size of the race, the previous venue grew too small to accommodate it.

“The close proximity to the hospital also posed a great challenge as road closures impacted patients needing quick access. Not only will the new venue eliminate this problem, it offers runners and spectators sufficient parking and easier access,” said Hall.

A new logo was also launched for the 2016 race and the start time has been changed to 5.30am. The route has also been adapted to ensure that more of the city can be seen and now includes a run past the Pietermaritzburg City Hall.

“The route change was made to impact the least on residents, businesses and churches along the way,” said Hall.

Hall also said that wheelchair racers will not be allowed from 2016 however, a new quarter marathon on the Saturday before will accommodate those in wheelchairs and hand cyclists.

“It would be advisable to make any and all changes at one time for marketing and financial benefits which is why all the changes have been made at once this year. We’re still here to learn and to make improvements to offer our great sporting community of our city,” said Hall.

Entry to the marathon is now available online and opened on 3 November. Visit
