CAN you picture life without your kitchen sink? Rinsing vegetables, washing bulky pots and pans, and getting that awful layer of grease off your hands after cooking could all become problematic if you were to go without it.

But when facing a clogged sink, we are forced to realise how much we take it for granted. In fact, there are probably few features in the kitchen that we use more than our sinks.

How to unblock your kitchen sink

• Bicarbonate of soda and vinegar

What’s great about this mixture is the fact that these ingredients are easy to get a hold of and, if you do a lot of cooking and baking, you are likely to already have these in your home.

All you have to do is pour half a cup of dry baking soda down your kitchen sink drain and half a cup of vinegar to follow.

Don’t be frightened by the bubbling and fizz — this reaction helps remove the build-up of grease and grime that most likely caused a blockage.

Leave this to work for about an hour, if possible, and then rinse it away using hot water. If you still have a clogged sink, you’ll need to repeat this process until the blockage breaks up.

• Use a plunger

This method is pretty straightforward. Fill a quarter of your sink with hot water and place your plunger directly over the drain opening.

In order to create a good vacuum, make sure that you don’t leave any areas of the drain exposed. Now plunge away until you remove the blockage.

• Use a re-purposed hanger

If you have a thin wire hanger taking up space in your cupboard, you can unbend it and straighten it out. You’ll need to curve one end and create a hook small enough to fit down the drain.

Once this is done, you can gently push it down the drain and use the hook to pull up any gunk like food debris or hair. Make sure that you are pulling the substances blocking your drain out of the sink rather than pushing them further in.

• Clean your kitchen sink pipe

This will most likely be your most effective method of unblocking your sink. You will need to put on a pair of gloves and place a bucket underneath your sink pipes.

You will need to remove the P-trap and clean out any gunk inside it. If your P-trap is held in place with slip nuts, you may need a pair of pliers to gently loosen them.

When reassembling, try not to over-tighten the slip nuts, as it will be difficult to loosen the P-trap later when you have a plumbing emergency.

With these simple tips, you’ll never have to panic about clogged sinks again.

Why call out a plumber when you can save yourself the expense and feel good about your DIY know-how at the same time?

There will, of course, be times when your attempts won’t suffice, and you just won’t have the technical skills to help you fix the problem. When this happens, it’s best to call on an expert.

But be sure to do all you can to prevent having a clogged sink in future by throwing solid waste such as egg shells, vegetable peels or rice in the bin.
