PIETERMARITZBURG gospel duo, Nathi Zuma and Nkanyiso Miya, have been nominated for an award at this year’s SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards.

The awards, now in their ninth year, at the Durban International Convention Centre (ICC) on 27 November, celebrates excellence in the gospel music industry by honouring musicians, producers and other related industry stakeholders.

The nominees were announced last Wednesday at a party at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Zuma and Miya were nominated for the Best Collaborating Song off their second album No Weapon featuring Dumi Mkokstad.

In this category, the duo will be going up against Israel Mosehla, Sbu Banda and Papa Ndu.

Speaking to the Maritzburg Echo, Miya said they are happy to be among those nominated.

“We are excited and hope that this third time will be a charm and we’ll bring the award home. It has been a tough year for us musically and this nomination is a reminder that our work is good enough.”

Zuma said they are busy working on their third album, which is due for release in February 2017.

“We want to thank all our fans for the continued support. Even with the upcoming album we urge them to go out and get it when it becomes available in stores.”

According to a statement issued by the awards organisers, this year saw more than 600 entries being received.

Six categories - Best AmaZion, Best Gospel Maskandi, Best Gospel Artist, Best Gospel Song, Best Gospel TV Showand Best Community Radio Show - will be decided upon by the public with no criteria used and will be monitored by SABC Mobile, a system that allows a fair and accurate voting process.

For the first time, the 2016 Crown Awards will be preceded by the Christian Expo Africa, which also takes place at the Durban ICC from 25 November leading up to the main Crown Awards.

The Christian Expo Africa is one of the many opportunities the Word Gospel Powerhouse provides through the Crown Gospel Music Awards for the industry and the public to engage in, network and exhibit their literature, merchandise, music, artwork and other relevant material.
