PEOPLE are invited to witness “raw” theatre talent in a play called uMakhosazane, the Musical at the Winston Churchill Theatre on Saturday. The play, which promotes unity despite different cultures, has a cast of 34 KZN actors, whom theatre-goers will meet on the day. Theatre-goers will also meet SABC 1 Uzalo cast members. The play is about a clash of two cultures - Xhosa and Zulu - said uMakhosazane media liaison officer Thokozani Shelembe. Makhosazane is a Zulu girl and her boyfriend Bhekizizwe is Xhosa. Both are from royal families.

Thandanani Qwabe wrote the play after concerns about the xenophobic attacks that took place this year.

Seeing there is still a misunderstanding among African people he inked his concerns by writing uMakhosazane, said Shelembe.

The play he said is about a couple who have an affair.

“Because of different cultures their love was a challenge. The parents got involved in their affair and made things worse for them, but because of their unbreakable love they made it through.

“They were forced to elope in order to continue with what they felt was special - the love they had for each other. Their relationship went through many hardships until the death of the queen - Makhosazane’s mother - but afterwards the two were able to return home and enjoy their love in peace,” said Shelembe.

“Everyone who enjoys theatre will love this project. The first hour will be music and poetry at 6pm, followed by the play at 7pm,” he said.

Tickets are R150 from the city hall on a buy-one-get-one-free basis. For more information, contact Xolani Zondi on 072 917 1127.
