THE 2016 Discovery Sport Industry Awards was one to remember as the Comrades Marathon Association walked off with two awards, Sport Brand of the Year and Sport Participation Event of the Year, last week.

The star-studded event was hosted at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg and attracted the nation’s top sportsmen and women.

The inaugural awards function was first hosted in 2012 and celebrates the best work off the field in the business of sport and showcases everything that is great about the South African sporting industry.

“Being presented with the Discovery Sport Industry Awards in two categories is a huge vote of confidence in our race and brand. We are incredibly appreciative to the whole team at Comrades who must take the credit for these achievements,” said CMA general manager, Chris Fisher.

Over 1 200 key figures and celebrities from the sporting world, including Lucas Radebe, Hashim Amla, Adriaan Strauss, Penny Heyns, Jessie Kriel, Trevor Nyakane, Josh Lewsey and Kagiso Rabada witnessed the nation’s top achievers being awarded for their sporting greatness.

The judging process for the awards is known to be one of the most transparent and stringent procedures of its kind. The process is overseen by Deloitte, the independent adjudicators of the awards, who ensure total transparency and enable an unsurpassed level of feedback to the award’s entrants.

“A recognition of our event and our brand by the most influential opinion makers in the sport marketing and sponsorship industry is significant. We are grateful to everyone who has supported the Comrades Marathon and contributed to this world-class, award-winning event of ours,” said CMA chairperson, Macdonald Chitja.
