IN celebrating five years in poetry, a Durban-based poet, Zamo Gwala, will host a one-man show in Pietermaritzburg on July 6.

The one-man show known as Phind’bhale Cofi will be held at Bessie Head Library.

Gwala, who is known as Cofi, said this is the way of celebrating and also thanking his fans for supporting him for all these years.

“Staying relevant in the industry is difficult. This is a huge milestone for me and I want to celebrate it with the people who support me and my art,” he said.

He said what makes this more special is that when he was growing up he never thought that he would do poetry. He said he used to recite poems when he was still in school but he never thought that it would become his first love as it is now.

“When I was growing up I loved playing soccer until one of my friends introduced me to poetry.”

Gwala said his friend, who was studying at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) at the time, would come back for holidays from university and would tell him and other friends about poetry that they did at university, and he would recite some of it for them.

“One day [my friend] took me and my other friends to the poetry show at UKZN. As I watched different poets reciting, I started falling in love with poetry. I then started writing my own poems. Since then, poetry is my life. I use it to inspire and encourage people not to give up on life.”

Gwala said his dream is to see poetry getting support like other genres and getting the recognition that it deserves.

Tickets for the one-man show will cost R120 for students, provided that they have students cards with them. General is R150 and R200 VIP.
