College athletes excel with ball, bicycle and canoe

THIS past weekend saw College host the Nashua Rugby 7’s tournament as well as soccer matches against Westville while the school’s cyclists were action at both the Mandela and Spur series events.

RUGBY 7s

The successful Nashua Maritzburg College Rugby 7s tournament was played in blistering heat on the campus and featured two age categories; U15 and U18.

The U18 pool was made up of 16 teams while the U15 pool comprised 12 teams.

Maritzburg College U15A were the winners of the Cup in the U15 event and our U15B side won the Bowl. Kearsney A won the shield.

The U18 category Cup Final was won by Westville A. College’s U18A and U18B teams made it through to the quarter-finals with our U18B side beating St Charles U18A in the pools.

SOCCER

This weekend, College’s soccer teams played against Westville. There were very good wins for our 1st XI, 2nd and 3rd teams as well as most of our U14 teams. Of the 17 games played, College won 9, drew 1 and lost 7.

CYCLING

Maritzburg College cyclists had a busy weekend taking part in both the Mandela and Spur series MTB events.

In the Mandela 21 km men’s race, Nic Burczak won the event in a time of 51:00.

He then went on to win the U15 Spur Series race on Sunday.

Also in the Spur Series races, Jess Stephens­ finished third and Ethan Kock 4th in the U14 race, while Daniel van der Watt won the U16 race with Cameron McDaniel finishing in third place.

CANOEING

In the Lance Park Memorial Night race held on 22 August, Maritzburg College’s David Evans paddling with Hamish MacKenzie finished first overall and was 1st junior home.

College staff member and canoe coach Brandon van der Walt together with pupil Bryce Lawson finished in fourth place, while Jonathan Cummings, Jordan Bense and Lance Arnold were the 1st K3 boat home and 1st K3 to finish in 11th place overall.
