HOSPITAL receptionist Sharinadevi Munilal of Netcare St Anne’s Hospital was recently acknowledged following her act of kindness.

According to the hospital’s general manager Louis Joubert, Munilal came to the rescue when a two-month-old baby girl from out of town was admitted to the hospital’s paediatric unit recently.

“The child’s mother found herself in a predicament, she was stranded in an unfamiliar town, and all alone,” said Joubert, adding that: “Our little patient’s mother was becoming increasingly concerned that they would run out of clean clothing, as she had no means of washing their clothing while she remained in Pietermaritzburg during her baby’s treatment in our hospital.”

Joubert explained that the mother then approached one of the hospital receptionists, Sharinadevi Munilal, to ask whether she could recommend a laundry service where she could have her baby’s clothes washed.

“Our wonderfully caring colleague, who is affectionately called Sharina by our staff members, did not hesitate to assist and offered to take the clothes to a laundromat. The next day, the mother was surprised and delighted when Sharina arrived at the paediatric unit with two bags of freshly laundered and crisply ironed clothing,” said Joubert. The manager explained that this was not the work of a paid laundromat service, but Sharina herself had thoroughly hand-washed, carefully ironed and neatly folded the mother and baby’s clothing the evening before. Highlighting that through this act of caring, Sharina provided a personal touch that was a great comfort to a weary mother in her time of need.

“While Sharina had no expectation or desire for recognition for the kindness she had shown, Netcare St Anne’s Hospital decided to bestow the Carer of the Year Award on her,” said Joubert. Furthermore, Joubert said Munilal’s care and compassion indicate that Sharina lives the Netcare values, particularly that of compassion, and is leading by example.

“She is an inspiration to her team, an asset to our hospital and the patients we care for,” concluded Joubert.
