CONCERNS have been raised regarding the delay of construction in Lester Brown Road in Mkondeni, after money that was allocated for it has been used on something else. This reflected on the additional table content at the Msunduzi Exco last Thursday at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall. In the table content it reflected that more than R6 million will be taken out of the Lester Brown Road budget and used to finish McKay Drive in Ashburton. Lester Brown Road was allocated R14 million in the 2017/2018 budget.Democratic Alliance councillor Glenn Robert McArthur said it is worrying that the Lester Brown Road construction has been put on hold again, which had been the case for past 10 years. He said the construction of the road has been on the budget for 10 years and every year it falls is taken out of budget because the money allocated for other projects. According to the information on the table content, the McKay Drive project started on February 2016 and was meant to be finished in July 2017, but it has not been finished.Lester Brown Road project started in June 2016 and is meant to be finished in December 2017.“The project in McKay Drive wasn’t finished because they didn’t have money to pay the construction company. “Now they want to take half of the money allocated for Lester Brown Road to finish McKay Drive.“I am worried that it won’t be finished again due to the lack of funds. I made an enquiry about this and they assured me that they will find money to finish Lester Brown,” said McArthur. He said he recommended they take the money to finish McKay Road from elsewhere, not out of the Lester Brown budget. Although McArthur wasn’t happy about the reallocation of money, acting municipal manager Sizwe Hadebe said the money for Lester Brown Road will be made available again in the mid-year review.
