PIETERMARITZBURG artists under the Phakamisa UMgungundlovu Arts Movement banner have organised a concert to lobby business people to fund the arts.Speaking on behalf of the movement Muntu Mahlobo, a Kwaito artist, said the purpose of the event is to uplift talent.“The event is basically a platform for local artists to showcase their talent. We are inviting the entire spectrum of artists in the arts industry from singers, crafters, poets and dancers. This event will be an opportunity for them to showcase their craft.”Mahlobo, who has over 15 years in the industry, said local artists do not get the acknowledgment they deserve. “We have invited municipal officials and the Department of Arts and Culture to come and see the talent the city has. It pains us when artists from other provinces are given preference over us when the city hosts big events and it’s not due to a lack of talent, but rather a lack of funds to nurture talent. Pietermaritzburg has talent, we do not want to lag behind Johananesburg artists.” The concert is on 2 July at the Market Square and the line-up includes Gidora, Mafridge, Msetswane, Mafeje and Zazi Ncube. “We are trying to make sure Pietermaritzburg artists get their dues. We appeal to local businesses to be part of this concert so that when we approach them for sponsorship they know what we can offer.”Artists who want to be part of the concert are urged to get to the venue at 10am to register. The Department of Arts and Culture will also be registering artists on their data base.
