A MAN was apprehended by the police on Saturday after allegedly selling cough syrup illegally.

In a joint effort by Woodlands community members and the Mountain Rise police, the 37-year-old man was arrested in the afternoon after the police received a call about suspicious behaviour at a house in the area.

Mountain Rise Police spokesperson Gay Ebrahim said that the community became suspicious after seeing countless people going in and out of the house and decided to contact the police.

When police responded they found the man to be in possession of a large number of bottles of cough syrup. The police arrested and charged the man under the Medicines Control Act and he is expected to appear in court soon.

Ebrahim said that the illegal distribution of cough syrup has become a major problem throughout the area.

“Almost every night that our members patrol, we find youngsters with these bottles,” said Ebrahim.

Thanking the community, Ebrahim said that the police are grateful for the community’s vigilance and role in assisting with the arrest of the man, and urged people in the community to report to the police anything they deem suspicious.

Ebrahim said that investigations into the matter are ongoing.
