DEMOCRATIC Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane took his #Change19 campaign to Woodlands on Monday to leverage the party supporters in fighting a by-election next Wednesday, 29 March.

Speaking to DA supporters at a street meeting Maimane said he was confident his party would retain ward 32 from the ANC.

“Like we won this ward the last time we want to retain it and we have a great candidate but furthermore we want to work for the people. When I look at KwaZulu-Natal, there is potential in this province. This should be a province that is thriving with job opportunities, where tourism is booming. Young people must be able to find jobs. We must do everything we can to remove corruption in this ward,” he said.

Maimane urged the party’s candidate, Shawn Adkins, to work tirelessly in bringing services to the poor.

“Don’t become those ward councillors that change their numbers as soon as they are elected. You work for the people, they are your boss. If you don’t work for them we will march and we will remove you because in the DA we want people who work for the community.

“I urge you to go to the polls on Wednesday and vote for this honest man, vote for change. He is a pastor, a truthful man who is coming to serve the people. He is not coming to tell lies or to defraud you. Vote for him to make sure he delivers the change the ANC has failed to deliver.”

Maimane told his party supporters that voting for the opposition would be taking a step backwards.

“Before the local government elections they said we will never govern and we told them we would govern. Now they say we can’t win this ward, we will win this ward. When we are done we will make sure we win this municipality. The DA will govern.”

He reassured DA supporters that the party was united across the board after utterances by Helen Zille that caused a stir on social media.

“There are many people who want to say this and that about the DA, I have heard them. We are united across all races to build a South Africa for all. In 1994 we had a pact to say we are better. The DA is the only party that has continued to work to keep that pact. Any view that seeks to undermine that pact is a view that is inconsistent to what the DA stands for,” he said.
