THE office of the Family Advocate in Pietermaritzburg recently hosted Meshack Kekana and Bruce Malgas of Dads in the Picture, a non-profit organisation that seeks to encourage every man to play an active role in the upbringing of children in a safe environment.

Kekana, the organisation founder, and Malgas have embarked on a national tour on motorcycles to promote awareness of children’s needs, in particular the importance of a father figure in the lives of children growing up.

Their tour ended on International Day of Families on 15 May.

“Statistics in SA show that over 70% of our children grow up without male figures in their lives. We are not talking about biological fathers here, just a male a figure to interact with,” said Kekana, adding that through their travels, as well as their website, and social media like Facebook and Twitter, they hope to promote their theme that “Every child needs a dad”.

He added the organisation is willing to help fathers with problems they may experience around parenting, and with issues such as access to their children.

“Sometimes men are not always comfortable to talk, but if they need advice, we are there to help,” he said.
