A JOINT operation by Alexandra Road Trio Crime Detectives, the K9 Unit and Ixopo detectives led to the arrest of a wanted suspect in the France area, Pietermaritzburg, in the early hours of Tuesday, July 12. Police described the man as a dangerous criminalKZN SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said Khulekani Mkhulise (25) was arrested in connection with various crimes committed in different areas. On Sunday, July 9, at around 12.20am, the K9 Unit acted on intelligence driven information about a suspect travelling to Pietermaritzburg in a black and grey Toyota Tazz, who was said to be in possession of an unlicensed firearm and so proceeded to Richmond Road where they spotted the said vehicle and called for back-up. “Members of the unit then gave chase and the chase led into France. “The driver jumped out of the vehicle and fired shots at members injuring a 53-year-old member of the K9 Unit before fleeing the scene,” she said. Mbhele said a joint operation was planned after the whereabouts of the suspect were received and the SAPS then went to his hiding place in France on Tuesday. “Knowing that the suspect was armed, members approached the house with caution and knocked on the door, but there was no answer. The door was then forced open and the suspect was found in possession of a 9mm pistol with eight live rounds of ammunition,” she said.Mkhulise was charged with attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The recovered firearm was positively linked to a case in Isipingo. The suspect was also wanted for two counts of attempted murder and murder committed in Ixopo and theft of a motor vehicle in Malvern. He appeared in Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 12 July for attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He was remanded in custody until July 20.
