HOWICK author Helena Davis will launch her first published bookThe Wind in the Wheat Fields on June 29 at Rosehurst from 9 am to 1 pm.

Speaking to the Maritzburg Fever, Davis said she grew up with an English lecturer for a mother and was surrounded by the classics such as Thomas Hardy and Charlotte Bronte, which sparked her imagination and knack for creating her own stories as she lay awake in bed.

“Due to my chronic insomnia I would lie awake in bed at 2 am telling myself a bed time story of my own. Insomnia became a pleasure and I could not wait to get back to my characters to add a bit more each time,” she said.

Davis said that she finally started putting ink to paper after telling her friend a story and having it well received.

Her book is a regency romance-inspired novel as a result of her love for the regency period.

“I love the regency period — the gracious old-world manners and manner of speech, and of course the dress of the times. And I am a great fan of Jane Austen, so the horse-and-carriage era is close to my heart,” beamed Davis.

The feel-good romance novel is a book that Davis claims is a must-read after a hard day at work, stating: “Everyone can do with a good dose of romance. It makes one feel better after a hard day.”

Obsessed with writing, Davis says she prefers to decline invitations to dinner parties in favour of her desk and laptop where she brings all her marvellous characters to life.

She is currently working on another book, titled The Solitary Man.

“Right now I am so in love with the main character in my current book. He is so unusual but oh so nice,” said the author.
