AMID much speculation, on Tuesday Maritzburg United Football Club officially announced Roger De Sa as their new head coach after Ernst Middendorp’s exit from the club in November last year.

De Sa will be taking over the reins at Team of Choice from caretaker coach Fadlu Davids who has been overseeing the team in the interim. De Sa joins Maritzburg United months after he was sacked by Ajax Cape Town in the season after two and half years.

Speaking at a media conference at Maritzburg United’s home base of Harry Gwala Stadium, De Sa said he was excited to be taking over as the club’s new head coach.

“Coming back here brings back the good feel that I always get when I am here. The support in Pietermaritzburg is amazing and the team is strong, there are one or two areas that I’m unhappy with, but those changes will be made.

“The team is more than capable, overall it’s an exciting time for me and I will try and do better. The support base I saw here last year was second to none, that is one of the factors that was key for me to make the decision to join the team.”

In ensuring he delivers the desired results De Sa said the support and open discussions with the club’s management will play a vital role.

“We know the difficulties of the club; this club is run by one man alone. It’s in a city that doesn’t draw massive sponsorship and we’re always gonna be playing second fiddle to the bigger brands.

“The challenges are to try and get brands across the country to notice us and we can do it, so hopefully we can be more consistent and try to get into the top eight, have a decent Cup run and keep players here longer than it’s been in a club. The players will stay here if the club is successful.”

De Sa said he was happy with the foundation that has been laid by his predecessors in the club.

“I think both Ernst and Steve in the past have done a great job. They got the club going with stability and consistency and that makes my job a lot easier, not forgetting the guys that stayed on in the interim to ensure the ship stayed on course, they’ve done a great job.”

De Sa signed a six-month contract with an option of renewing for two years.

Maritzburg United chairman Farook Kadodia said it has been a difficult season for the club where they had the greatest escapes.

“It was important for us to carefully select this appointment.

“The acting head coach Fadlu Davids and his team did an impeccable job in keeping the team within the top eight.”

Kadodia said the team’s desire is to finish off the season in a strong top-eight position.

“We go a very long way with the coach, more than 10 years. We have a coach who we believe has great quality and football skills.

Maritzburg’s first fixture of the new year will be away at Polokwane City on 8 February while their first home game will be against Kaizer Chiefs on 11 February.

The Team of Choice is in mid-table with 19 points from 15 games.
