Death of Colonel Ungerer

2017-02-01 06:03

IT is with much sadness and deep regret that we have learnt of the death of a former colleague and friend, Colonel Louis Ungerer.

He was previously stationed at SAPS Mountain Rise, South African Police Narcotics Bureau, Pietermaritzburg, Public Order Policing, Pietermaritzburg, later transferred to Gauteng, where he served for many years as head of detectives at SAPS Daveyton until his retirement.

He retired in 1996 and relocated to Pietermaritzburg.

Ungerer was an outstanding 1st team rugby player in Pietermaritzburg and played in practically every position whenever an 8th man was required to bolster the team. He was versatile and possessed the necessary speed and agility to swing a game for his team.

He was the head of sport and recreation for the old Witwatersrand division.

Ungerer also served on the national selection committee for the National SAPS Rugby Squad.

A memorial service, celebrating his life was recently held at the NG Kerk in Hayfields attended by several hundreds of friends, family and former colleagues to bid farewell to Ungerer.

Speakers paying tribute on behalf of the late colonel, spoke of the anchor of stability Ungerer was to his family and friends, despite his recent chronic illnesses.

To the prominent Ungerer family of Pietermaritzburg, especially my special erstwhile station commander and mentor from SAPS, Prestbury, Captain Prop Ungerer, our deepest sympathy and condolences to the family on the death of a dear brother, friend, father and senior police officer.

He is survived by Sherly and his sons Louis, and Divan and daughter Blanche. May his soul rest in peace. We shall miss you.
