MSUNDUZI Municipality has cleaned up the illegal dump site at the Derby Place Market in Northdale.

Maritzburg Fever reported on the filthy state of the illegal dump on December 13 (“Derby Place Market is ‘Disgusting’”).

Residents in the nearby flats complained about the strong smell coming from the dump site, and market stallholders blamed the municipality for not collecting the rubbish there, and said the municipality only did “half a job” when collecting the rubbish.

Last Friday Maritzburg Fevervisited the market and found people working on the site and the area had been cleaned and fenced off.

Thami Dlamini on the site, said they were the contractors hired by the municipality to build a structure which will only allow stallholders to make use of to discard their rubbish.

He said it will be similar to a house but with no roof.

“This wall will prevent people, who are not market stallholders, from throwing the rubbish here.

“The bins will be put inside the area and it will be the responsibility of the stallholders to keep this place clean.

“ The general public will not be allowed to use this facility. It’s also for business owners in the market area,” he said.

Dlamini said it would usually take them two weeks to complete this kind of a job, but because of the holidays there may be some challenges as suppliers close for the holiday season.

“We hope to finish before the second week of the new year if we do not experience any problems with the closure of suppliers,” he said.

“We want to maintain and keep the area clean and ensure that illegal dumping does not occur in the area,” said Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Thobeka Mafumbatha.
