An unbearable stench, flies and insects are what Northdale residents in the vicinity of Derby Place Market have to deal with due to the overflow of garbage at a nearby illegal dump site.

Residents in the flats opposite the illegal dump site say they’re unable to open their windows due to the stench and insects that come from it. They blame the market stall holders who fail to discard their rubbish on Bombay Road every evening for the municipal truck to pick up.

One resident, who did not want to be named for fear of victimisation, said: “The municipal truck comes every day to collect the rubbish. The stall holders are just too lazy to take their rubbish out to the road.

“Full responsibility should be taken by the market sellers,” said the resident.

The source claims that she is unable to open her windows as flies invade her flat. She also said that she unable to sit outside on hot days as the smell is unbearable.

A Bombay Road resident Craig Naidoo says the problem dates back to about four years ago.

Attempts were made to speak to the market stall holders, however, these were in vain as the problem persists. Vagrants now live and sleep at this illegal dump site that stinks and is disgusting.”

Mbongeni Ndlovu, who owns a stall at the market, says it isn’t the stall holders who dump their rubbish just anywhere, he blames the municipality for not doing their job properly.

“This was a dump site before, now the rubbish overflows onto the road. Municipal workers used to pick up the rubbish every day, now they only fetch half the load and leave. This not only affects residents, it also affects us as business people because most of us sell food.

“Municipality needs to do something because the rubbish is going to block the road if it is not cleared.”

He says the vagrants who live and sleep at the site aren’t a problem.
“They just sit here and help us sometimes and we give them what we have. They don’t bother anyone.”

Msunduzi Municipality Spokesperson Thobeka Mafumbatha denied that municipal workers and municipal truck only pick half of the rubbish. “The problem is that the bins are being abused and sometimes the truck is unable to lift it up because of the waste throw on the floor. People need to work with us in keeping the area clean,”she said.
