MEMBERS of Iskcon Pietermaritzburg gathered at the Sri Sri Dayal Nitai Gaura Hari Temple on the corner of Balhambra Way and Bombay Road on Thursday, the eighth day of the waning phase of the damodara month, to celebrate the appearance of Radha Kunda. Speaking to the Maritzburg Fever, Nityananda Pran Das, who was the speaker at the temple, explained what the day symbolises, stating that it was important for everyone to grow spiritually. “Even though today we come together to share in on the readings of this special day, no matter what religion you follow, it is important that you participate and share in on your religion,” said Das. In his reading from a book called The glories and pastimes of Srimati Radharani, Das spoke of how a demon took the form of a bull and terrorized the Vrajavasis until Lord Sri Krsna killed the demon. However, in doing so, he committed a sin. Lord Krsna, then looking to be cleansed of this sin, kicked the ground with his heel and created a hole. He then invited all the “tirthas” into the water in the hole and took a bath in order to be purified from his sin. Lord Krsna declared that the pond he created exist eternally for others to cleanse themselves and that is why this day holds such a symbolic place in the Hare Krishna faith.
