Dog impaled on SPCA’s fence

2019-02-27 06:01

STAFF arriving for work at the Pietermaritzburg SPCA on Tuesday were met with the upsetting sight of a dog impaled on the security spikes of the front gate.

SPCA adoption supervisor Diya Maharaj, who made the grisly discovery yesterday morning, said it appeared that the person who brought the tan six- or seven-year-old Africanis to the SPCA and had tried pushing the dog through the gate. The dog tried to turn around to go back to the owners and it became stuck.

Maharaj said SPCA staff had to put the dog down while it was stuck on the gate because removing it would have caused too much pain. She appealed to the public not to take such measures when the SPCA’s kennel is full. “A person can tie their dog to the gate then call our 24-hour hotline to notify staff.” That number is 083 627 9736. — Witness Reporter.
