AT the close of the 16 Days campaign and a fund-raising run for abuse victims at Dales Park sports grounds last Friday Pietermaritzburg Police Station Spokesperson Captain Khosi Khonjelwo said: “Because 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children has ended, this does not imply that we will stop raising awareness about domestic violence.”
The KZN Christian Centre, Pieter- maritzburg Community Policing Forum, Pietermaritzburg Police Station officers and the public took on the streets and ran five kilometres to raise funds.
Khonjelwayo said they wanted to get people together in a fun way and raise awareness about domestic violence.
“Since the 16 Days of Activism campaign started, we as police, have been in communities raising awareness. Domestic violence is a serious problem. We get abuse cases every day. “People must stop being ashamed of ‘coming out’ [about it].
“We will continue and support victims of abuse. “We encourage everyone, not just women and children, also males to report abuse. They must know they can rely on us and trust us,” said Khonjelwayo.
Kisten Sybil won oldest participant trophy for the run.
