A STEADY flow of people visited Liberty Midlands Mall last week to welcome the East Coast Breakfast team, Darren Maule, Kerri Miller and Sky Shabalala, during the live broadcast of their show promoting the East Coast Radio Toy Story with Game campaign.

Now in its 16th year, the campaign is one of the longest-running annual corporate social investment initiatives in KwaZulu-Natal. Over the next six weeks, the campaign will collect new toys for distribution at paediatric wards in state-owned facilities across the province. All Game stores will have collection boxes.

The show, which was live from 6am to 9am, saw people dropping past on the way to school and work, early shoppers and mall staff members coming through to take a photo with their favourite radio hosts.

Many visitors did not come through empty handed and made generous donations of toys to the campaign and enjoyed birthday cake, courtesy of ECR’s 20th birthday celebrations.

Business owner, Gillian Luiz, who owns a toy and hobby shop in Cascades, donated 45 toys to the initiative.

“To see the joy on the children’s faces when they get toys is just overwhelming, that’s why we decided to be a part of the initiative. We want to spread the joy,” she said.

This year every cent of the funds donated to the campaign will be channelled to the Game AmaLunchbox project that is aimed at feeding children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

This project was launched in 2008 to help curb the detrimental effects of hunger on the educational development of children because ultimately hungry children cannot concentrate on schoolwork.

Last year over R1.5 million was raised for East Coast Radio’s Toy Story with Game and more than 100 000 new toys were donated to disadvantaged children.
