A FRUSTRATED Hoosen Haffejee (Berg) Street business owner has started filling potholes outside the entrance of his shop, saying he is fed up with waiting for the municipality to take action.

Casper’s Breakdown Services owner Yakoob Moosa said he and some of his staff filled one of the massive potholes outside his business which had become “quite large” over the past few months.

“No one else was going to fix it so we decided to fill it up with cement,” said Moosa.

He said he could only afford to fix the potholes outside his business and could not do the entire street. He said that the rest of the road desperately needed attention. “If we all took an interest in our city and did a little bit we can get comfortable again,” he said.

“Potholes can even be filled with sand just to stop vehicles from getting damaged. It is left to the individual if he or she wants to do something,” he said.

Another business owner in Hoosen Haffejee Street, who asked not to be named, said although the busy road was an issue, there were “massive potholes across the city that need to be filled soon”.

“Berg Street is very busy. There are many businesses along the road including a primary school. Cars are having to swerve to avoid the potholes and that puts them at risk of either swerving into another vehicle or going over the potholes and damaging their cars.

“The municipality has not come out to fix the potholes and I don’t know how much longer our roads can hold out,” said the businessman.

“The road is just an abomination. If we are under administration then surely the municipality should start ironing out things like potholes? People like Moosa are cutting into their business hours to do the job that the municipality is supposed to be doing,” he said.
