THE first steps were taken towards essential repairs to the East Street hostel last Monday by the provincial Human Settlements Department.

The hostel which accommodates approximately 300 residents and houses male tenants only dates back to the last 70s and was historically designed for men working away from home and plying their trade in the city during the pre-democracy era.

The hostel has since fell into a state of disrepair with security and basic services like hot water being denied to tenants.

Many residents have been appealing to the department for such a renovation and welcomed the proposal.

“We are very happy to be getting this much needed help after such a long time,” said one resident who wished to remain anonymous.

Ward 32 councillor, Shaun Adkins said that he was pleased to have witnessed the first steps being taken towards repairing the hostel.

“This is quite a historic facility. These envisaged repairs will now allow for the residents to live with a sense of pride and human dignity,” said Adkins.

Human Settlement senior manager Simphiwe Nikelo declined to comment on the repairs citing that he is not at liberty to discuss the plans with the media.

The first phase of repairs are due to be completed by the year end according to Adkins.
