SHANE Patchay, a man marred by controversy, was gunned down and killed outside his Eastwood home on Thursday night.

After returning home to Patry’s Road from soccer training with his team, Re-United, Patchay was shot and killed while opening his gate to park his vehicle in his yard.

Four men allegedly approached and shot Patchay, who desperately tried to evade his killers by running towards his neighbours home. The men gunned him down as he ran.

Neighbours, who wished to remain anonymous, said the men then fled down a nearby lane to Pikkewyn Street where they allegedly sped off in a getaway car.

“We heard loud gunshots and rushed outside to see Patchay laying on the floor. After checking his pulse I knew that it was too late and that he was already dead,” said the neighbour.

Patchay had a notorious reputation for being part of an Eastwood gang, Cash Money Brothers, in the 1990s and was also linked to gun and drug running along with violence in townships like Magoda and others.

He was also known for his passion for football, having taken a keen interest in the Re-United football club and serving as a coach for a long period in the club’s history.

Police say they believe the shooting was a hit and that it could be linked to gang relations. They are investigating a case of murder and no arrests have yet been made.

Tributes poured in on Facebook at the announcement of Patchay’s death, with many pronouncing it a sad day for the Eastwood community, while others were not so quick to label him a saint.
