KWAZULU-NATAL Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo has strongly condemned the cold-blooded fatal stabbing of a nurse from Edendale Hospital, allegedly by her husband, who also allegedly later shot and wounded her male colleague and his brother.

It is alleged that on the morning of Friday, May 2 an enrolled nurse Nontobeko Kheswa (41) left her Woodlands, Pietermaritzburg home with her husband in the family car, en-route to work. But she never got there.

Her lifeless body, still in her white uniform, was discovered dumped in a nearby sugarcane field in the township, covered in blood. According to her relatives, she had sustained multiple stab wounds all over her body, including on the neck.

It is alleged that on the same day, her murderer caught up with the late nurse’s male colleague and his brother on a road near the Edendale Mall. He allegedly fired shots at them, hitting the male nurse on the arm while another bullet grazed his ear. His brother, who was driving, also sustained a gunshot wound. Both had to receive medical treatment.

The suspect fled the scene. Police subsequently traced his vehicle to Imbali township, where he was arrested. After being interrogated, he allegedly led police to where the body had been dumped.

The murder of Kheswa, who worked in the hospital’s medical ward, has sent shock waves among her colleagues. She was a mother to four children who are between 10 and 21 years old.

MEC Dhlomo, who is the chairperson of the KZN Men’s Forum, described the incident as both shocking and sad, and once again pleaded with women not to stay in abusive relationships.

“We are extremely disturbed by the murder of one of our nurses in such a cold-blooded manner. We are always particularly saddened when we lose a healthcare worker through sudden and unexpected death. This nurse leaves behind four children, including a 10 year-old. The prime suspect in her murder is someone who was supposed to be a caregiver, nurturing and protecting her and her children, like a good man should.

“It is extremely painful, and makes you wonder what could have pushed the perpetrator to resort to such a heinous act, which can never be justified.

“Unfortunately, we’ve been seeing a lot of incidents of femicide in this department in recent years. It is extremely worrying because it could be a microcosm of our society, an indicator of what women out there are going through.

“That is why we always appeal to women to speak up when they feel unsafe, and seek support — from the courts of law and even the police if necessary — to get out of an abusive marriage or relationship.

“We would like to commend the police for arresting the perpetrator. We truly hope that justice will take its course, and send a strong message that people do not have to resort to murder or violence to resolve disputes.

“Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the deceased nurse. We also wish those who were injured speedy and fully recovery.” — Supplied.
