WHAT was supposed to be a routine evening walk to her garden turned out to be a nightmare for a 79-year-old woman from a Bellevue complex as she was tied up and raped by a trespasser.

Spokesperson for the Alexandra South African Police Services (SAPS), Captain Kholeka Mhlongo, confirmed that the incident took place on Thursday evening at 7.30 pm.

“We were told that the lady went to her garden to see if her domestic helper had tended to the plants and watered them. Upon doing this she then noticed an unknown man in her carport and questioned him as to why he was in her yard,” said Mhlongo.

Mhlongo added that once she did this the suspect approached her, grabbing her and telling her to shut her mouth.

“The lady said that when she tried to scream the intruder forcefully pushed her to the ground onto the grass and tied her up with cable ties and proceeded to rape her,” said Mhlongo.

She also stated that when the man left the woman was able to contact her neighbours who then offered her help.

The woman also found that her television, along with two cellphones had been taken. Mhlongo confirmed that a case of rape and theft was opened and that an investigation is underway.
