PIETERMARITZBURG SAPS are hunting for a man who allegedly broke into the house of a 87-year-old woman and stole her cellphone, house keys and remote gate control and attempted to rape her last Wednesday.

The assailant, who was allegedly armed with a panga, was her garden worker.

According to a reliable source within the SAPS, but not authorised to speak to media, the assailant gained access to the house through the back door while the victim was in the bathroom.

“He forced the bathroom door open when he got inside and pushed the victim to the floor. He tried to remove her underwear, but she resisted. He then assaulted her and tried to suffocate her with the hat she was wearing,” said the source.

The source said the fight between the victim and assailant lasted for an hour.

The source added that the assailant threatened to kill the woman if she didn’t co-operate.

“After a horrific fight between the victim and assailant, he managed to overpower her and dragged her into a bedroom and took off her underwear.

“He repeatedly tried to force himself onto her. The woman began to scream through the bedroom window, and men, who were in the area, came to see what was happening,” he said.

The assailant allegedly then ran towards Durban Road.

When Maritzburg Fevervisited victim’s house last Wednesday, a woman, who said she was the victim’s daughter, confirmed the incident and said her mother was in hospital for a check-up.

Pietermaritzburg SAPS Spokesperson Sergeant Mthokozisi Ngobese confirmed the incident and said no one has been arrested.

He said police are investigating a case of sexual assault and house robbery.
