STOP Hunger Now Southern Africa signed a memorandum of understanding with the Pietermaritzburg and district Community Chest to eliminate hunger in Pietermaritzburg.

Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa’s CEO Saira Khan said: “The memorandum of understanding is a joint venture between Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa and the PMB Community Chest that will initially focus on providing 300 children with a hot nutritious meal five times a week. We hope to grow this within the next six months - funding being available,” said Khan.

Stop Hunger Now is an international organisation which was established in the United States in 1998 by Dr Ray Buchanan.

The organisation manages the distribution of food and life-saving aid across the globe.

Stop Hunger Now SA is a volunteer-based meal packaging and nutrition programme and was established in 2009. The South African branch has operations in Johannesburg and in Cape Town. Its vision is to eliminate hunger.

The chief patron of Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa is Graça Machel.

“The programme commences in January and the first meals are expected to be delivered this month. It was a joint decision by both me and Michael
[Deegan] of Community Chest to do this as we are opening an office and warehouse in PMB, and they were an ideal partner,” said Khan.
