THE main entrance to Edendale Hospital was closed off on Tuesday by a small but exuberant group of protesting staff members who were calling for their human resources manager to step down.

Sibusiso Gwamanda, regional secretary for the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu), said the employees have been complaining about their HR manager to the hospital management for the past two years.

“The employees have no faith in their HR manager. He hardly attends meetings and when he does, he never gives the workers feedback. He’s a dictator and has favourites among the staff.”

Gwamanda said since 2016 they have had at least three meetings with the hospital’s management regarding the workers’ complaints and it was recently decided that an investigation would be conducted.

“We are protesting here today because we want the CEO of the hospital to write a letter instructing the manager to step down while investigations are ongoing as he is interfering with investigations,” said Gwamanda.

“If they don’t take us seriously, we will shut down this entire hospital,” said Gwamanda.

The spokesperson for the KZN Department of Health, Ncumisa Mafunda said: “Edendale Hospital did not experience any disruptions to its normal delivery of healthcare services, following brief protest action by some individuals this morning ...”
