IF the words of the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) general manager Keletso Totlhanyo are anything to go by, Athletics South Africa (ASA) and SABC could reach an agreement to avoid a TV blackout by the end of the week.

This year’s Comrades Marathon is scheduled to take place on June 9, but there’s still no guarantee the race will be shown on domestic television. To make sure that the popular race is televised live on the cash-strapped SABC, CMA leadership met with the SABC and ASA on Monday. Although the parties met last week, they couldn’t strike a deal, which prompted CMA to intervene.

At the most recent meeting in Johannesburg, Totlhanyo and CMA chairperson Cheryl Winn couldn’t reach an agreement, but Totlhanyo seemed confident a deal would be struck soon, saying: “They were all positive and we hope that we are very close to the end of this thing. Maybe by the end of the week or early next week we will have positive news.”

If no agreement is reached, the 2019 event will not be televised as pay-TV channel SuperSport has said it’s not interested in the race.
