THE Nelson Mandela Schools Speech Contest will be held on July 16 and July 17 at the Bessie Head Library on 260 Church Street.

The contest aims to equip high school pupils in the Pietermaritzburg region with life skills of Public Speaking and Time Management. It will also honour the legacy of an international icon Nelson Mandela, who fought for the liberation of all South African irrespective of colour, race, gender or creed and sexual orientation. He spent 27 years in jail and was released on February 11, 1990, and became the first President of a democratic non-racial South Africa.

The contest has been approved by the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

Twenty-five government and private schools from Pietermaritzburg are expected to take part in two days speaking in English and iSiZulu.

The contest will start at 8 am and finishes at 3 pm.

Pupils and educators will have to bring their own tea and lunch, because the contest is not funded by government and the private sector.

There is no entry fee, schools must send an e-mail to enter to nelsonmandelaspeechcontest@gmail.com

Further enquiries can be directed to the co-ordinator at 083 241 1291 between 9 am and 5 pm from Monday to Friday only. — Supplied.
